The Word “Perfect” in Hebrews

The word “perfect in its adjective, verb, and noun forms, occurs in Hebrews no less than fourteen times. It has a special significance for our author, who uses it not to point to morality or character, but to completeness of God’s purposes–as in “bringing to perfection.” It is a particularly effective word for our author’s argument, as he draws out the contrast between the preparatory character of the old covenant and the fulfillment of the new. What Christ has accomplished in his death brings us to what must be described as eschatological fulfillment, hence perfection. The root is found in the following passages:

Verb form Heb. 2:10; 5:9; 7:19,28; 9:9; 10:1,14; 11:40; 12:23.
Other forms Heb. 5:14; 9:11; 6:1 ; 7:11; 12:2
