When writing to the Colossian church, Paul describes Onesimus as “our faithful and beloved brother, who is one of you” (Col. 4:7-9). That is one of the church at Colossae. And if Philemon had been the slave, Onesimus’, owner then it seems reasonable to assume that the church to which Paul writes is the church in Philemon’s home and equally reasonable to assume that Philemon lived in Colossae. Secondly, Archippus was a member of Philemon’s family, probably his son. And in Colossian 4:17, Paul tells the church in Colossae to tell Archippus, “See that you fulfill the ministry that you have received in the Lord.” If Archippus is Philemon’s son and, as some have suggested, the present leader of the Colossian church, then it stands that Philemon, along with Archippus are from Colossae. Philemon probably lived in Colossae.
