The Believers Inheritance

The New Testament revelation concerning the inheritance that believers can merit by faithful perseverance in the faith and good works is extensive. All believers will receive much inheritance simply because God chooses to bestow it on all (cf. John 3:3, 3:5, 3:16, 3:36; Rom. 5:1, 5:9, 8:1, 8:31-39;  1Cor. 15:53-57;  1Thess. 1:10, 4:13-17;  1Pet. 1:9). Nevertheless, believers who remain faithful to the Lord will receive even more inheritance (cf. Matt. 5:12, 5:46, 6:1-2, 6:4-6, 6:16, 6:18, 10:41-42, 16:27, 25:21, 25:23; Mark 9:41; Luke 6:23, 6:35, 19:17, 19:19; John 12:26, 15:14;  1Cor. 3:8, 3:14, 6:9, 9:16-18, 9:25, 9:27;  2Cor. 5:9-11; Gal. 5:21; Eph. 5:5;  Phil. 4:1; Col. 3:24;  1Thess. 2:19;  1Tim. 4:14, 5:18;  2Tim. 2:5, 2:12, 4:8; Heb. 11:6; Jam. 1:12;  1Pet. 1:7;  1Pet. 5:4; 2John 1:8; Rev. 2:7, 2:10-11, 2:17, 2:23, 2:26-27, 11:18, 22:12). Some passages indicate that this inheritance involves participation in the wedding banquet at the beginning of the messianic kingdom (e.g., Matthew 25; et al.). Other passages speak of it as reigning with Christ (Matt. 19:27-28; Luke 19:17-19; Luke 22:28-30; Rom. 8:17-21) or as treasure in heaven (Matt. 6:19-21; Matt. 6:29; Matt. 19:21; Luke 12:32-33; 1Tim. 6:17-19). It also involves receiving praise and honor from Jesus Christ and the Father (Matt. 6:1; Matt. 6:5; Matt. 6:16; Matt. 25:21; John 12:26;  1Cor. 4:5;  1Pet. 1:6-7;  2Pet. 1:10-11). These honors are sometimes spoken of as crowns (Phil. 4:1;  1Cor. 9:24-27;  1Thess. 2:19;  2Tim. 4:6-8; Jam. 1:12;  1Pet. 5:1-4; Rev. 2:10; Rev. 4:9-10). 1This paragraph is from Dr. Thomas Constable’s commentary on Hebrews 9:15. https://www.studylight.org/commentaries/eng/dcc/hebrews-9.html

God has promised His faithful followers future blessings. Specifically, He has promised that we will receive rewards when we see Him if we persevere faithfully now (cf. 2Tim. 2:12).

It is a faithful saying: For if we be dead with him, we shall also live with him: If we suffer, we shall also reign with him: if we deny him, he also will deny us: 2Tim. 2:11-12.  Paul made frequent references to the judgment seat of Christ (2Tim. 1:12, 1:18, 4:8). This whole epistle [2 Timothy] constitutes an exhortation for Christians to remain faithful to the Lord in view of that coming event. While all Christians will reign with Christ in the sense that we will be with Him when He reigns, the faithful will reign with Christ in a more active sense (cf. Matt. 10:33; Luke 12:9). [Note: See Zane C. Hodges, Grace in Eclipse, pp. 67-81.]  The Bible seems to teach that there are degrees of reigning as there are differences in rewards (cf. Luke 19:11-27; Rev. 2:26-27, 3:21). If the believer departs from following Christ faithfully during his or her life (i.e., apostatizes), Christ will deny him or her at the judgment seat of Christ (Matt. 10:33; Mar_8:38; Luke 12:9; cf. Luke 19:22; Matt. 22:13). [Note: Mounce, p. 517.]  The unfaithful believer will not lose his salvation (1Jn. 5:13) or all of his reward (1Pet. 1:4), but he will lose some of his reward (1Cor. 3:12-15; cf. Luke 19:24-26).2This is from Dr. Thomas Constable’s commentary on 2 Timothy 2:11-13

If the believer departs from following Christ faithfully during his or her life (i.e., apostatizes), Christ will deny him or her at the judgment seat of Christ (Matt. 10:33; Mark 8:38; Luke 12:9; cf. Luke 19:24-26).3ibid

“What they had endured for Christ’s sake entitled them to a reward. Let them not throw it away. The NT does not reject the notion that Christians will receive rewards, though, of course, that is never the prime motive for service.”4Morris, Morris, Leon. “Hebrews.” In Hebrews-Revelation.
